What Is a URL Slug?

A slug identifies a page within its URL. For example, text-to-slug-converter is the last part of example.com/tools/text-to-slug-converter/. A descriptive slug gives people a clue about the page before they open it. It does not guarantee a search ranking.

Slug Examples and Practical Choices

10 Tips for Café Owners! becomes 10-tips-for-cafe-owners with the default separator. You can keep numbers when they identify a version or year. Removing common words can shorten a title, but always check that the meaning survives. Google recommends hyphens to separate words in URLs, so hyphens are the default here.

Use the optional length limit as a writing aid, not as an SEO score. The tool stops at a whole word when it can. If the first word alone exceeds the limit, review and edit the result manually. Unicode mode preserves Hindi and other scripts; ASCII mode cannot transliterate every language and warns when the result is empty.

Bulk Workflow and Duplicate Slugs

Paste titles one per line or import a CSV. Select its title column, generate results and edit any row. Repeated slugs in this batch receive numbered endings such as guide and guide-2. This only checks the current list; it cannot check your existing website URLs. Export the final title-and-slug pairs to CSV for review.

Using a Slug in WordPress

  1. Create or open a post or page in WordPress.
  2. Find its Slug or Permalink setting and paste your reviewed result.
  3. Preview the complete URL and check it is unique on your site.
  4. If changing a published URL, review existing links and redirects so visitors can still reach the page.

Does this converter improve rankings?

A clear URL can help people understand a page, but this tool cannot promise higher rankings. Content, site structure and many other factors matter.

Should I use a hyphen or underscore?

Hyphens are the default because Google recommends them for separating words in URLs. Use underscore only when your own system requires it.

Can I create Hindi URL slugs?

Yes. Unicode mode preserves non-Latin text. ASCII mode does not automatically translate Hindi into English, so review the result and your CMS behavior.

Can bulk mode check slugs already published on my site?

No. It detects repeated results within the current batch only. Check existing site URLs before publishing.

Does my text leave my browser?

Conversion and CSV processing happen in your browser. The tool does not send your entered titles to a conversion server.

What happens if I change a published slug?

The page address can change. Check old links and set an appropriate redirect if needed.
